Roger Federer, one of the best tennis players of all time, just said he’s going to stop playing after more than 20 Grand Slam singles titles and more than 20 years of playing.
Federer, who is 41 years old, wrote a letter to his fans on his social media to let them know. He left because he had hurt over the past few years. The last Grand Slam he won was the Australian Open in 2018.
“As many of you aware, the past three years have hard for me because I’ve hurt and had surgery. I have worked hard to get back to where I was before. But I also know what my body can and can’t do, and lately, its message has been clear. I turned 41 this year. Over 24 years, I’ve played more than 1500 games. Tennis has provided me with more than I could have ever imagined, but now I have to know when it’s time to stop competing.
Laver Cup would be his last ATP event.
Federer said next week’s Laver Cup would be his last ATP event, and he won’t be playing any more Grand Slams or tour events.
“This is a hard decision because I will miss everything the tour has given me. At the same time, there is a lot to be happy about. I guess I am one of the most fortunate people in the world. I was born with a unique talent for tennis, and I played at a level and for a more extended period than I ever thought possible.
“The 24 years I’ve been on tour have been a fantastic adventure. It sometimes feels like it’s been 24 hours, but it’s also been so deep and magical that I’ve already lived a whole life. I’ve been fortunate to play in front of you in more than 40 countries. I’ve laughed and cried, felt happiness and sadness, and most of all, I’ve felt very much alive. Through my travels, I have many great people who will always be my friends. They assumed time out of their busy lives to come to watch me play and cheer me on worldwide—many thanks.
“When I first became curious about tennis, I was a ball kid in Basel, where I grew up. They used to be amazed when I watched them play. I felt like they were giants, and I started to dream. I worked harder because of my dreams, which made me start to believe in myself. Some success gave me confidence, and I started on the incredible journey that has led me to where I am now.
“So, from my heart, I want to thank everyone worldwide who has helped make a young Swiss ball kid’s dreams come true.
“Finally, to tennis: I love you and will never leave you.”
Federer was a great tennis player.
One of the best tennis players was Federer of his time. When Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic were rising stars, they played great games against him. At one point, he had won the U.S. Open four times in a row.
He also won a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Olympics and a silver medal in singles at the 2012 Olympics.
But Federer has had trouble with injuries over the last few years. He didn’t play in any professional events in 2022 and only 19 from 2020 to 2021. The Swiss Indoors Basel in 2019 was the last tournament he won.
