President Ferdinand, “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., was at the game between Gilas Pilipinas and Saudi Arabia on Monday night at the (MOA) Mall of Asia Arena. It was the fourth window of the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Marcos showed up late in the third quarter when the Philippines were already ahead.

Gilas beat Saudi Arabia 84–46 and got back on track after a tough loss to Lebanon in Beirut on Friday.

Jordan, Filipino-American, and plays for the Utah Jazz led Gilas to have 23 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Kai Sotto also stood out with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks.

PBBM congratulates Gilas on the Saudi win

On Tuesday, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. told the Gilas Pilipinas team. He was proud of them for beating Saudi Arabia in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.

Marcos was in the crowd Monday night, cheering for Gilas. He went on Twitter to congratulate the team after its 84-46 win at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“Binabati natin ang Gilas Pilipinas sa kanilang panalo laban sa koponan ng Saudi Arabia sa naganap na FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Match kagabi. (We are congratulating Gilas Pilipinas for winning to Saudi in FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Game last night),” said Marcos. He sat at courtside beside Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chair emeritus and businessman Manny Pangilinan.

He was sure that the team would continue to make the country proud and give it an honor.

“Kumpiyansa tayo na gagawin nila ang lahat ng kanilang makakaya para makapagdala ng karangalan sa bansa (We are confident that they will do everything to bring pride to the country),” Marcos said.

Marcos came to the game in the middle of the third quarter and stayed until the Philippines won.

Getting ready for hosting

While that was going on, Senator Christopher Lawrence Go said that he would talk to players, organizers, coaches, and sports officials. Therefore, about how the government could help get ready for next year’s FIBA World Cup.

Go, who is in charge of the Committee on Sports, recently introduced Senate Resolution 83. Which wants to look into ways to fully support the Philippine basketball team in future international competitions. Also, “look over the preparations made by the concerned offices or agencies for our hosting of 2023 FIBA World Cup.”

He also said that the Senate plans to review laws and policies to help Filipino athletes do their best in future international sports competitions and to protect their welfare even more.

Bong Go, and Senators Ronald Dela Rosa and Francis Tolentino were also at the Gilas game.

Senator Sonny Angara sees the hosting as a chance for the country to show that it is “a basketball-loving nation” and an excellent place to visit, but he also says there is still much work to be done.
