Daniil Medvedev, number one in the world, made it to the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals on Thursday. However, Iga Swiatek, number one in the world for women, was upset by American Madison Keys.
Denis Shapovalov has never beaten a world number one. Top seed Medvedev beat him 7-5, 7-5, and Poland’s Swiatek lost to 2019 Cincinnati champion Madison Keys 6-3, 6-4. Keys needed five match points to finish off the surprise win.
Shapovalov lost in an hour and three-quarters. He has lost all eight matches against the best players in the world.
Medvedev will play 11th seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals after the American beat the sixth seed, Andrey Rublev, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 7-5.
“It wasn’t easy. It was a fight today,” said Medvedev, who became the top seed at the US Open when Rafael Nadal lost in the second round.
“The game was played at a high level and was pretty close. My goal was to stay in as many points as possible and put pressure on him.
Medvedev got breaks late in both sets, even though his Canadian opponent was a wild player.

“Even before the ATP Cup, at the start of the season, we trained together,” Medvedev said. “He won Indian Wells, and he won the Masters. I have to do my best if I want to beat him.”
Unseeded Keys was very happy to beat Swiatek, whom she had lost twice before.
“I had a few games where I was close to winning,” Keys said. “The last time we played, she beat me pretty badly, so I’m glad to win this time.”
Swiatek never saw an ace and was broken five times while trying to return from being one game away from losing.
The Pole won 37 straight matches this season but lost in the third round of the Masters for the second week. She had the same thing occur to her in Toronto seven days before.
On Friday, Keys will play against Elena Rybakina, who won Wimbledon. Rybakina beat Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-4 to get to the last eight.
The second seed from Estonia, Anett Kontaveit, was also knocked out. China’s Zhang Shuai beat her 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Petra Kvitova, from the Czech Republic, beat Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, and 6-0, and her luck started to turn against top-five players.
The third-round win was the same as when Kvitova beat Jabeur a year ago.
Kvitova, who has won Wimbledon twice, broke six times while her fifth-ranked opponent from Tunisia made six double faults.
