Last weekend ended the NBA summer league in 2022 in Las Vegas. Some of the league’s top young talent had a fantastic opportunity to shine. All 30 teams competed for 11 days in five games each in Las Vegas.Over the week and a half, there was some fierce competition, but in the end, the Portland Trail Blazers won the Summer League. Numerous former Big Ten athletes participated in the proceedings, including Ron Harper Jr., a Scarlet Knight, and stalwart of the program.
Many young NBA prospects, including some top draft picks, played in the Big Ten competition only last year, similar to Harper. Let’s review the Big 10 Rookies’ NBA Summer League performances.
1. Marcus Bingham – Michigan State
Bingham played for Michigan State’s Spartans during the previous season. Before earning an Exhibit 10 deal, the power forward went undrafted in the 2022 Okbet NBA Draft. A summer league invitation and a minimum-wage contract are both included in Exhibit 10. In 15.8 minutes a game, he contributed 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals on average.
2. Malaki Branham – Ohio State
Malaki won the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award the previous year. The former Buckeye shooting guard went 20th in the NBA and performed well in Las Vegas. For about 28 minutes per game, he averaged 15.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.
3. Gabe Brown – Michigan State
Brown signed a contract with Exhibit-10 this summer after concluding his Spartan career as the team captain and leading scorer for his squad in March. The small forward averaged 11 points and 3.5 rebounds in his summer league games. In the Thunder’s championship game, where he nailed five 3-pointers, he scored 23 points.
4. Max Christie – Michigan State
The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Christie with the No. 35 overall pick. He is a former Spartan and was chosen for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2017. During summer league play, the shooting guard averaged 8.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
5. Kofi Cockburn – Illinois
When Cockburn’s name wasn’t called on draft night, he signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Utah Jazz. For three games in Las Vegas, the seven-foot-tall Big Ten beast averaged 6.3 points and 9.0 rebounds. Although the center plays a different brand of basketball than the NBA, he has already started to adapt and get better at it.
6. Johnny Davis – Wisconsin
The Washington Wizards drafted Davis in the NBA Draft with the 10th overall pick. The defending Big Ten Player of the Year had a mediocre, if not disappointing, summer league campaign. He played about 25 minutes each game, averaging 8.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
7. Moussa Diabate – Michigan
Diabate was the final Big Ten player selected in the draft, going to the Los Angeles Clippers with the 43rd overall pick. He only participated in two games for his squad, but in each game, he averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. In a short period, the power forward established himself.
8. Ron Harper Jr. – Rutgers
After going undrafted in the draft, Harper agreed to a two-way deal with the Toronto Raptors. Although his score was patchy, the former Scarlet Knight led his team with 25 rebounds. The small forward played in all five of his team’s games, averaging 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds.
9. Caleb Houstan – Michigan
Houstan was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 32nd overall choice in the second round, making him the first Big-Ten selection. He was the first Michigan player chosen in the 2019 NBA Draft, and his 60 made three-point field goals ranked first for the Wolverines. The small forward had a point total of 8.5 on 32.5 percent shooting (25 percent from three) and 3.8 rebounds per game.
10. Jaden Ivey – Purdue
The Detroit Pistons selected Jaden Ivey, a graduate of the Big Ten, with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. He is the former Boilermaker and chosen for both the All-American Second Team and the All-Big Ten First Team. Also, he became the highest selection from Purdue since in 1994 NBA Draft. In summer league games, the point guard averaged 15.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists.
