Colonia’s record-breaking performance of 62 kilograms in the snatch, which beat the world and Asian youth standards of 61 kgs, gave her sister. However, the latter is the sister of 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympian Nestor Colonia and 1988 Seoul Olympian Gregorio Colonia, their uncle and coach, and a bright future.
“Today she broke both the Asian and the world records” (Sunday). Therefore, Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella told the Inquirer, “We are training her for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.”
With a total lift of 134 kg, Colonia broke the continental youth record of 133 kg. Which she had set in the snatch.
However, Colonia didn’t get a perfect finish and to settle for silver (72 kgs) in the clean and jerk. Which Duong Thi Kim Yen of Vietnam won with 73 kgs.
Puentevella says this new accomplishment adds to the growing list of young Filipino women lifting champions. Also, the list includes 18-year-old Asian champion Vanessa Sarno and the Ramos sisters, Rosegie and Rose Jean. They will all likely win medals at the Olympics.
Vanessa, Rosegie and Rose Jean win more medals
“Vanessa, Rosegie, and Rose Jean are all there to win more medals, and we’re going to get more,” said Puentevella. She was recently inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame.
Sarno, who won a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games at 71 kg, and Rose Jean. She won the world youth championship at 45 kg, are also set to compete in Uzbekistan. Also, a lot is expecting them.
Sarno, the current Asian champion, won the women’s 71kg gold medal at the Vietnam SEAG. She also set new records in the snatch (104kgs), clean and jerk (124kgs), and total (239kgs).
On the other hand, Rose Jean Ramos defended the women’s 45kg title at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships last month at the Domo de la Feria in Leon City, Guanajuato, Mexico.
